The Eighth International Conference on Strategic Management in Latin America, cosponsored by FGV and the Journal of Business Research, will be held on São Paulo, Brazil, February 19 and 20, 2019. The theme of the conference is:
“How can Latin American Firms Contribute to a more Rebalanced Society”.

International Conference on Strategic Management in Latin America

The objective of the Conference is to bring together academics and professionals interested in the region in Strategic Management, to exchange theoretical knowledge, empirical research results and applications on current strategic issues in Latin America. To contribute to the SMLA conference, it can be done in four different ways:

 

  • Rigorous theoretical documents
  • Applied or empirical research documents
  • Comparative study cases
  • Teaching cases.

 

All the works must be original, unpublished and presented in its final form. We encourage original contributions that explore strategy formulation, strategy execution, internationalization, cumulative learning processes and their impact on operations. Attention is also given to how a company's profile and access to capital markets improve its ability to capture opportunities for growth and internationalization.

 

A special issue of the Journal of Business Research with the best papers presented at the Conference will be published. The documents that will be included in the special issue will be selected by a special editorial committee based on a double-blind review process.

SMLA CONFERENCES

  • The Fourth International Conference on Strategic Management in Latin America, co-sponsored by the School of Management of the Universidad de los Andes - UASM and the Journal of Business Research, was held from January 13 to 14, 2011 in Bogotá, Colombia. The theme of this conference was strategic management in Latin America. Empirical and applied documents based on the experience of companies in the region, comparative case studies and cases of education were welcomed.
  • The 5th Strategic Management Conference of Latin America: "The future of business in Latin America: Strategy in emerging market economies" was held in Mexico City on January 10 and 11, 2013 at the Autonomous Technological Campus of Mexico (ITAM) Rio Hondo. The conference brought together 32 researchers from the region with diverse research interests. The program included 36 simultaneous presentations, as well as keynote speaker Robert Hoskisson and discussion tables.
  • The Sixth International Conference on Strategic Management in Latin America, co-sponsored by INCAE Business School and the Journal of Business Research, was held on January 8 and 9, 2015, in San José, Costa Rica. The theme of this Conference is: "Strategies for growth, regional expansion and global competition" Latin America has been one of the fastest growing regions in the last decade. Many companies are expanding their operations inside and outside their country of origin. Our objective is to understand the strategies and critical factors that supported the national and international growth of Latin American companies between 1990 and 2014.
  • The Seventh International Conference on Strategic Management in Latin America, Conference held in Santiago, Chile, and hosted by the School of Business, Universidad Adolfo Ibañez, on January 5 and 6, 2017, with the support of the Journal of Business Research, the seventh version of the meeting was developed in the Postgraduate Building of the UAI. The theme "Strategic Management in a changing world". In this context, the development of technology and the importance of social networks has transformed the business models and the corporate and global strategies of companies in Latin America, according to their organizers, which implies the need to develop new resources and capacities to face a changing world.

TYPES OF PAPERS

The purpose of the Conference is to gather scholars and practitioners interested in the region to exchange theoretical insights, empirical research results and applications on current Latin American strategic management issues. The following contributions are welcome:

 

  1. Rigorous Theoretical Papers
  2.  Applied or Empirical Research Papers
  3. Comparative Case Studies
  4. Teaching Cases

PROGRAM CHAIRS

Jorge Carneiro, Associate Professor of Strategy and International Business, FGV Sao Paulo School of Business Administration, Brazil. Chair of the Strategy Division in Organizations of ANPAD (Brazilian Academy of Management) 2015-2017. Editor-in-chief of BAR (Brazilian Administration Review, 2010-2015). Associate Editor of International Business Review, Multinational Business Review, Management Research and BAR. Member of the board of EIBA (European International Business Academy, 2011-2016) and former President of EIBA (2015). Member of the Executive Committee of BALAS (Business Association of Latin American Studies, 2009-2014).

Carlos Rodriguez, INCAE Business School, Costa Rica His research work in processes of "offshoring" and globalization of the value chain has received international awards of great renown. His thesis was awarded with the Gunnar Hedlund Award, awarded by the Stockholm School of Economics for the best thesis written in International Business for the period 2014-2016. He was runner-up in other competitions such as the prize for the best dissertation in the area of International Business (AIB) of Peter J. Buckley and Mark Casson in 2015 and the Northeastern University Award for Best Dissertation in International Business (IM Division D 'Amore-McKim School of Business) in 2016. In addition, two of its research papers have been nominated for the Haynes Prize awarded by the International Business Academy (AIB) for the best article written by an author under 40 years of age.
